Different icon sizes???

Is it possible to have larger icons (48x48 or larger) on
the desktop and normal sized icons (32x32) everywhere
else? I know that I can change the icon size by going to
display properties but that sets the size for all icons
but having 48x48 size icons in the start menu or in the
folders doesn't look nice.

I have never seen a way to accomplish this. The built-in icon size setting
is global. You may be able to do this with some kind of third party skin or
theme program.

Third party program called MicroAngelo will do it.
