Different first and LAST page margins

Hi, all.

I have some documents that need to be sent the the County Recorder
periodically. The Recorder requires all documents to be
on legal size paper
with a 2 inch top and bottom margin on the first and last page
with a 1/2 inch top and bottom margin on the inside pages

So, a two page document would be 2" margins on each page.
A three-page document would be 2" on the first, 1/2" on the second, and 2"
on the third.

Is there a way to do this so Word will know to fix the middle page
automatically? I want to be able to type and insert text and have it set the
margins accordingly.

I would create a template that had all these setting setup. Then when you
create a new document, you would go to File | New and double click on your
template. All you have to do is create a blank document, add all your
settings and then choose File | Save As. Select Template from the File type
drop down, give the file a name and click SAVE. Do not change the location
though. Word will automatically save all your templates in the proper area
so that you can get to them via File | New.

You could also record a macro with correcting the "second" page. You would
just need to make sure that Different First Page was set up in the page setup
options and that the Same As Previous setting in the header and footer were
turned off.

You can't change margins per page, only per section.

But if you have a section break after the first page and at the beginning of
the last page, text will not flow through it and it will be a real hassle.

With letterhead, the solution is to leave the margins all the same, but to
use a textbox anchored in the first page header to push the text into a
narrower space. You'll find detailed instructions under "More Complex
Letterhead" here:
http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/Letterhead.htm

I think, using that technique on the first page, and setting up a
conditional footer so that the same technique is employed on the last page,
might be a solution to let you just type and not think about it.
See here re Conditional headers and footers:

I'm not totally sure how one would go about combining a textbox and a
conditional footer, you'll probably have to experiment. I guess the anchor
would replace the conditional text. It's possible this won't work for the
last page.

Others may have alternative approaches.

And, as finalword said, you would then save the initially set-up doc as a
template.

No text box is required for top and bottom margins, just Space Before/After,
and this could easily be included in an IF field.
