Difference of "." and "!"

As an amateur Access user, I've noticed that sometimes a period "." is used
instead of an exclamation "!" mark or vice-versa. For example as in:

Parent!fieldname or Forms.Formname.Fieldname or Me.Fieldname

I don't know if I used them correctly in my examples, but just curious about
how and when are they used, and if there is any difference.
