Is it possible to set up one id for number crunching, another for
quick logon, another for databasing, another for graphics?

Depends specifically what you mean. You could set up different accounts and
have each account stop/start services and running processes when they logon
(exclusively) and perhaps that would give you better performance for
whatever you need. You could set up accounts that have different programs
in their start menu/desktop so you could get to things faster on a per logon
basis. You could setup accounts in a variety of ways doing different things
when they logon exclusivey - but one account will affect the others if you
logon to multiple accounts and try to start/stop services, etc.
