Did split with PartitionMagic 8 and now PC doesnt boot...

I apologize if this isnt the right newsgroup.

Specs:
PartitionMagic 8
XP Pro SP1
80 GIG Maxtor HD(12 GIGS freespace)

This was the first time I have used PM. I wanted to split my HD into 2
partitions. So I choose that option in PM and created a second partition(I
picked Logical) and select 60 Gigs of files to move there. The PC rebooted
and PM did its thing. Now the PC wont boot. When I put in a boot disk I can
go to the primary partition but when i do a DIR it gives me the 'Abort,
Fail, Retry' thing. I was able to view the contents of the second partition
though.

I put in PM rescue disks and thought if I put everything back it might fix
it so I did a Merge but now i still cant DIR the Primary partition.

Any ideas?

Check using PM to make sure the merged partition is set as "active."

It may be faster but I don't know about "better". Tech support at powerquest
should be much more capable of handling your request. After all that is what
they are there for. I know I would contact them first if my data was
important to me. I am not a powerquest tech but have some experience with
Partition Magic. You might want to boot with the PM diskettes and ensure
that the partition is not Hidden and is set as Active then reboot. It is
possible that during the repartitioning process your partition became non
active or Hidden.

You refer to using a "boot disk". Is this a DOS disk like a Windows 98
Start-up floppy? If so, and your partition is formatted as NTFS, which is
generally the case with XP, then you will encounter the problem you see. DOS
can not recognize the NTFS format. You can use the XP Recovery Console to do
this. Info on using the Recovery Console is found here

PowerQuest listened to my complaint about an
"Error 1513" that developed when I tried to partition
my main HD with PM 8......and hasn't solved the
problem yet. Their stuff is good for inspecting what is
where and what size it is......but I'm very wary about
what harm it can do. As you found out.
