How do I remove a word from the dictionary that I added
by mistake. In other words, the word I added was
misspelled and I need to get it out of the autocorrect.
When I check my autocorrect file, none of the words I
added are in there and there are no special dictionaries
created. I have been putting them into whatever pops up
with a word is not recognized and I click on add to
dictionary. But now I can't find them in order to purge
the dictionary of misspelled words I added.

Try "Tools", "Options", click the "Spelling & Grammar" TAB, click the
"Custom Dictionaries" button, select your dictionary, click "Modify", select
the word you want deleted and click "Delete".

You'll have to make a clear distinction, because the dictionary (spelling
checker) and AutoCorrect are two different mechanisms with different storage
locations.

It sounds like you used the spelling checker, not AutoCorrect (which doesn't
bother asking you, it just makes the correction). You right-clicked the
misspelled word and chose "Add to Dictionary", right?

To fix the wrong spelling in the dictionary, go to the Tools > Options
dialog and click the Spelling & Grammar tab. From here the directions differ
a little, depending on your version of Word.

In earlier Word versions, click the Edit button next to the Custom.dic. In
the editing window, delete the misspelled word. Close the window and the
dialog.

In Word 2003 (and maybe 2002, I'm not sure) click the Custom Dictionaries
button. Click the Modify button. Find the misspelled entry, click once on
it, and click the Remove button. Close the dialogs.
