Dictionary is correcting in French!

All of a sudden, when I do a spellcheck, my dictionary is suggesting
corrections in French. For example, the word "circle" comes up as an
incorrectly spelled word and the suggested corrections are all french
spellings (cercle).

I have checked the Language (Tools - Options - Spelling & Grammer - Custom
Dictionaries - Modify - Languages) and the language is set to All Languages.
I have even changed the Language to English - U.S. but this made no
difference.

Try Select All (control-A) and then use Tools | Language to actually
format the text itself as English. Your custom dictionary has nothing
to do with this matter, and that's what you have been looking at (hey,
nice technique in telling what you've done when asking for help).

Language is like a invisible text format--you don't tell Word which
dictionary to use, but rather you tell it "these words are English" and
"these occasional words in italics are actually French" and it picks the
right dictionary on the fly according to how the text is tagged.

So the custom dictionary can stay as All Languages.
