Dialup Modem driver needed Please!

I am using RC1. I have 2 modems I have been trying to use.
One is a Best Data/smartlink 56k which will not load, althouhg I have seen
users here say it will. I also have a Intel 536ep which I have seen many
more users here say it works as well, I can get neither to work. I have
spent 2 days trying and looking. I have no way to use the update site to
check for a update there as My only connections is dial up.

So my questions to all you great helpers out there is where can I get the
driver I need or how do I use the ones I have. And I am no noob at this so
yeah I tried all the ways possible. Or what are some good modems that DO work
for sure? I have seen a few said here, but could not find those specific
ones at Newegg or Tigerdirect. SO if anyone does post a known for sure
working one can ya also please say where to purchase it! I have no problem
in buying a new modem to get around this problem. I would rather buy one
then keep searching and coming up short!

Thanks

I assume you are using the 5600 build. My Zoom Voice/Fax PCI modem worked
fine in that (no special drivers), but would not work in 5728. This one has
a Conexant (or whatever spelling) chipset.

Well I found this model and it 30 bucks at newegg ( Zoom Telephonics
H08-03357-B 56Kbps PCI Bus (Plug and Play) Accura V.90 Internal Modem -
Controllerless with DSP ) Is that is? Ihope to find one for a lot less that
works, but if I have to get I have to get it!

Here is the url to the actuall product, it does not say chipset. I need to
be able to find one here that works.

Any external dial-up modem should work fine, since they don't normally need
special drivers.

So Is that a for sure thing? If so I will just buy one I guess. I thought
about using a different computer to network them into vista and use the
internet connection form the nonvista pc to try to use vista updates would
that work? Havent tried it out yet as I have never made a network, and seen
a lot of questions concerning vista not working with networks here as well.

I also thought about installing it into vmware, and then going to the update
center from there, would this help? Or should I just buy a external modem?
And if so Are there any you know for sure that work, or is a positively
correct that they all dont use a driver I woudl need to get vistafied?

Thanks for your help!

And Are you positive about this no driver needed thing? I looked at a few on
newegg, and they are serial modems, thats the one right? Well they all have
comments about the drivers working from the cd or not, so it seems as if they
do use a driver as well. Is there anyway you can go look there and point me
to one like you mean! Thanks ahead of time, seems as if you are the only
respondent here!

In this case the driver is mainly nothing more than an inf file that
contains the modems and manufacturer's name, the modem's initialization
string and other AT commands. And fortunately most of the AT commands are
common across brands. As such, you can always use the generic external
driver with it, and if necessary provide Windows with any specialized
initialization string the modem may need if the generic initialization
string fails to work. The modem's manual should indicate what initialization
string it should use.

SO what should I do? Can I modify a existing inf file to work with my modem
I already have? If so how to do it? If not do you know of A external that
does work. I just mentioned the drivers being used becuase I thought you
meant they were not used at all being a external modem

Can I just copy all associated inf, sys modem files for my intel modem, since
it is said to work for vista, into vista folder that is used? Intel 536ep
modem? I will try that! Thanks for all your help!
