Dialup lost, Registry damaged?

Hello,
After a clean install of xp & updates etc, I forgot to image my smoothly
working OS, as is usually my habit.
The issues I am facing is the result of, while being connected, made a few
network settings change, using Tune up Utilities 2006. Which prompted me to
restart the system to take their effects?
The irony is that before I could manually disconnect the dialup, faced a
temporary power shut down.
On resumption of power, now face the following problems:

1. Dialup connections in the control panel have disappeared. I do get
connected to the net using the shortcut on the desktop, but the internet
activity monitor on the right lower corner doesn’t appear.
2. Even if I make another connection, it doesn’t appear in the control
panel; only the short cut appears on the desktop.

Do you think that the system registry got damaged in the earlier process?
Do I have a solution to rectify it apart from a format & fresh install?
If manually tweaking with registry can sort out the whole issue shall be
grateful if some one can explain that stepwise, coz tweaking registry can be
disastrous if one has no knowledge.
Like where would the dialup settings be e.g. HK_Current User/Machine/……the
exact path etc.
It shall save me from the ordeal of a clean install, updates settings etc.
Any advice shall highly be appreciated.
Regards!

PS: Please do keep in mind that my machine is on a dialup/ end user/ stand
alone using win xp sp2 pro, am new to newsgroups, my knowledge about
computers is poor & so is my English language.
