Dialog boxes

When I open an existing document or template, I get an error message saying
that the command cannot be performed because a dialog box is open - even
though no dialog box is open. If I click OK the error message disappears, and
the document then opens. Does any one have any ideas why this happens, and
how do I stop it?

Using Word 2003/Windows XP Professional.

Chances are there is a dialog box open - behind the window in view. The
usual cause for this is the office plug in of Norton AV. Turn it off.

Alvin,

I was having the "The command cannot be performed because a dialog box
is open" problem. (I use Word 2003, Windows XP Professional.) I don't
know why.

I went to the Windows Update webpage several times over several days.
No updates needed or available each time (except for IE 7, which I
don't want). I tried the following:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827732
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/820919

and I disabled Norton's Internet Security 2007 Microsoft document
scanning. None of this worked. I then downloaded Windows LiveOne
Care. After it scanned for viruses, it found updates! (For LiveOne?)
I downloaded these, uninstalled LiveOne Care, re-visited Windows
Update, and downloaded more updates! (That were removed, missing, or
needed updating?)

Word is working fine now, and my laptop (Dell Inspiron 6000, 2.0 GB
RAM) is running fast again.

Good luck.
