Dial-up Connection to Internet Hangs Windows XP

When I dial up to my ISP, Windows XP immediately hangs.
Well, mostly hangs. I can disconnect the connection and
certain other functions work, but can't bring up Task
Manager, IE, Outlook, etc.

I disconnect the connection and about five minutes later,
things reset themselves and the hanging then unhangs

Any advice on what I should check?

It sounds like you have some 3d party software (anti-virus or non-MS
firewall) installed?
