A so-called 56K modem connects at something less than 56K. This is a
limitation imposed by telephone technology and is usually explained in the
fine print of the advertising and packing of 56K modems. If you're able to
consistently connect at 50.6 kbps then you are doing very well.
On the other hand, if broadband service is available in your area, and is
not too expensive, you will be blown away by how fast you can connect to the
Internet, compared to your 56K modem.

I am working on a dial up connection, but I have noticed that my speed is
only registering at 50.6 kbps. Is this normal? I thought that with a 56K
modem, the speed would be somewhere up towards 56. Without changing to high
speeed, can I increase this a little?
