if you mean how do you make the machine a dhcp client just
simply click on the tcp ip properties and select obtain ip
address automatically.
Windows xp does not have a dhcp server. You will have to
use windows 2000 server for that. Unless you enable
internet connection sharing on the machine. This acts as a
kind of dhcp server and will give other clients on the
network dns and ip addresses and will enable the other
machines to connect to the net.

Is this feature only available in XP Pro
Because I didn't find it on a computer running the Home Edition.
Rob, both XP Home and XP Pro function as a DHCP server on the local
area network connection when Internet Connection Sharing is enabled.
Reed, both XP Home and XP Pro have exactly the same settings in their
TCP/IP properties.
