my network card sometimes has problems getting an ip
address from my dhcp server is there a way to lengthen the
time that it tries to communicate with the server. Maybe a
timeout entry in the registry, I am running windows XP.

Thanks

I'd ascertain why this is happening first. Are you the only computer on the
network? As in, do other computers work fine getting DHCP addresses? Have
you updated your NIC driver with the manufacter's latest WinXP driver? Do
you have errors in your event logs? Have you tried a different patch cable?
A different port in your hub or switch, if you're using one?

I see you got several suggestions, so have you considered trying those
suggestions, or at least answering her questions so we have enough
information to try to guess what might be wrong?

Try another cable. Cables fail. Reseat the LAN card. Move on from
there.
