Andy

I have DHCP server on win2k server.
However I can still ping to the old DHCP server.
The old DHCP server is shutdown and turned off.
Also Some clients still get the IP address from
old DHCP server. There are no logs. Also i checked in DNS
about any possible entries, why this is happenening?

Hi,

Are you sure the old DHCP server is not running?
Is this a switched environment? If so, you may want to try rebooting your
switches

Yes i am Sure, The Server is powered OFF and shutdown,
and even removed the network cables from server.
Also i restarted all the Network switches, still
same problem. I still cannot understand why and
where it is finding this host, because it is still
pinging on the network with that ip address.

If you're getting replies, you're pinging something else that is assigned
that address/name. A powered-off/disconnected device cannot reply to a ping.

try TRACERT <IP>

I did tracert and it completes the trace,
and says as trace complete and does not give
any name

Somewhere on the network a device is using the old DHCP server's address.
Try ping -a <ip address> and see if it resolves to a name. If not you will
need to get a sniff and find the Mac address and trace it down via switch
logs.

Hi mark,

Thanks for the solution. Actually I wanted to
know where and what is sniff and where i can get
or download from ? Also why and what is the
reson happening this?

He meant a network sniffer - do a google search for "Ethereal + sniffer".
Why did this happen? I don't know, I can't see your network from here. But
it is obvious that something is using that IP address, so either it's been
assigned using DHCP or someone has statically assigned it.
