DHCP server not doing PTR records or downlevel clients' DNS updates

dude

We just upgraded to a Win2k AD domain from a NT4.0 domain. Before I
authorized the DHCP server and placed it into the DNSUpdateProxy group, it
registered PTR records for DHCP clients. Yesterday, I authorized DHCP
server in AD as an enterprise admin then placed it into the DNSUpdateProxy
group. After that, any Win2k DHCP client registration registers only the A
record in the forward lookup zone, the DHCP server is suppose to register
PTR records for Win2k DHCP clients, but it's not doing it. It's also NOT
registering any records for downlevel clients (NT, Win98). I'm baffled
because the options to do this are checked in DHCP. I don't know what else
to check and I'm out of ideas at the moment. I also checked the "trust
computer for delegation" option for the DHCP server's computer object, but
it has not made a difference. The problem isn't in the "allow secure update
only" on DNS because it didn't work either with Non-secure update option.

any ideas?

thanks

Got WINS installed on the server? W9x and NT needs it.
Check your DNS-server-setup as well.

WINS is installed, but that is irrelevant to my question. My point is that
the Win2k DHCP server is not doing DNS updates for the downlevel and DHCP
clients.

This is getting funnier by the moment! It's like saying my computer is
broken -> check my computer. ?!??!?! I'll just have to seek help
elsewhere.

Make sure you have the DNS dynamic updates set in the DHCP snapin.

Hello,

If you look at the properties of your DHCP server on the DNS tab, what do
you have selected?
If you look at the properties of the scope on the DNS tab, what do you have
selected?

Do you have a check box on the "Enable updates for DNS clients that do not
support dynamnic updates." ?
This should enable the DHCP server to update downlevel clients.
