DHCP fallback

B

ben

I am trying to backup our domain controller w2k.. doing tests...

but need to backup the DHCP server so that if the server falls down for
some reason, that the secondary server will come up and take over
DHCP... is there a way to do that?

TIA

Ben,

What you will want to do is have two servers running DHCP with the SAME
scope defined and the same scope options. The on each you will need to
create exclusion ranges that are reciprocal to one another. From there you
should be good to go. How large the rang is up to your needs. Some people
do 50/50 and have load balancing on their switches, others do 80/20 between
a local site and their core.

Just don't be tempted to set up non-overlapping ranges rather than the
exclusions. This will allow a faster-responding DHCP server to NAK a valid
renewal request and potentially lead to problems.

If you have many reserved addresses you may wish to consider using the DHCP
Export/Import tool:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...26-81f0-478a-836c-b31ed463af5e&DisplayLang=en

This will let you back up the existing range(s) and should something fail,
import to a new server and activate.
