DHCP and WINS

Hi...

In my enterprise network (a hospital) we have a domain, and every computer
in that domain receives it's IP via DHCP...

We must have NetBios for the file and printer shares that we have (is that
right???).. The problem is that when i turn on a computer it have a huge
delay to the other computers start seeing him...

Is there a way that the dhcp server automatic upfate a wins server wich the
ip that it gaves to a computer so I can configure the machines to lookup int
that wins server???

Or there is a way much better than that???

Ohh, the clients uses win 98, win 2k and some use win XP...

The server is a WinNt4, and we use BDC...

"Huge" delay? Are you talking about thru Network Neighborhood or My Network
Places? You mean, about a 15 minute delay?

That's normal. The Browser service can take upto 15 minutes to populate the
'neighborhood'. However, if you have any mapped drives or printers, they're
available right away, since they don't rely on the browser service.

The browser service uses WINS, but WINS doesnt't use the browser service.
But that doesn't make it any quicker. WINS is for NetBIOS name resolution
support across routers (meaning if you have multiple subnets or offices or
locations) because NetBios broadcasts are stopped at the routers. If you
only have one subnet (no routers between you and another office), then you
really don't need WINS and broadcasts will suffice, but WINS makes it
efficient. If you have mutliple offices or subnets in your building, then
yes, you should be running WINS. NT4 requires WINS in this scenario.

Is there a way to make a central list of the machines netbios, and DHCP
update the ip of the machines, to stop the boadcasts that browser service
do???

No, that's the way the Browser service works. Install WINS to minimize
broadcasts.
