I'm getting an intermittant error on startup - Device Monitor has encountered
a problem and needs to close. So many apps have automatically upgraded
lately, I don't know where to start tying things down. (Dell, BT, Adobe...
more)
App Name: ICXTMON.EXE
Can anyone tell me where to start?
Many thanks!

Perhaps you misspelled the filename; there's no mention of such a file
in a Google Groups search.

http://groups.google.com/groups/search?q=ICXTMON.EXE+&qt_s=Search+Groups

It's also possible it's a program supplied by the manufacturer of your
computer or a component, but it's just as likely that you have malware
on your system.

Oops - transposed... IXCTMON.EXE is the corrected app. Thanks for checking!

Hmmm, looks like it's an Exception Monitor (whatever that is) that's having
problems. I'm not a whiz, I'm afraid, so I don't get much out of the jargon
that's offered in the Google groups writeups. Is this a system monitor that's
acting up, or?

What's the filename? Is it the one I suggested?

oooo boy, re the Exception Monitor thought, I followed the link you gave me,
but now see it has a P in the name. which will be the death of me - 7 little
letters! Here's the error message I get, honest that's the name.
DEVICE MONITOR
Error signature
AppName: Ixctmon.exe AppVer: 0.1.25.0 ModName: Ixctmon.exe
ModVer: 0.1.25.0 Offset: 0000246e

Locate the file and look at its Properties. See if it appears to be a
file installed by the OEM of your computer.

Click Start, Run, type SFC /SCANNOW, click OK. If any files are damaged
or missing, they'll be replaced. You may need to reboot afterwards so
damaged files will be replaced.

You helped - thanks. In a roundabout way I found the problem. It was actually
a lower case L in the name, not an I, and that led me to Lexmark, which is
where the problem sits. Feeling foolish, I'm going to back off while I can.
Many thanks for taking time to patiently walk me through the paces...
