I only have 16 colours available using windows 2000. I
have tried following the below instructions:

Procedure:

1.Start the machine up in safe mode by pressing F8 when
the screen says "For Troubleshooting and advanced startup
options for Windows 2000 press F8". If it gets as far as
the logo and the scrolling bar along the bottom of the
screen then it’s too late. Make sure that you have the
drivers disk for your display card handy. Once the menu
is up, select safe mode and proceed to load Windows 2000
as normal.
2.Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel, and now double
click on the System icon.
3.Click on the tab marked Hardware, and then click the
Device Manager Button.
4.Double click on Display Adapters.
5.Highlight any entries which then appear indented to the
right, for example, RAGE IIC AGP, then select the Action
Menu, and choose Uninstall. If there are more than 2
entries then you will need to remove these one by one.
6.Once removed shut down and restart the computer.
7.The Computer should automatically detect the Graphics
Card install the driver. If a driver is not find it will
launch the Add New Hardware Wizard.
8.The Screen resolution can now be set correctly, with the
more than 16 colours.

I am unable to get passed no.4 as there is no option on
device manager for display adapters. What should i do?

Appreciate your help.

Hi SPW,

That's very unusual..
Did you see the Device Manager?

If you didn't go back to safe mode
and you can also find it by

Start> Settings>Control Panel>Computer Management>d/c Device
Manager>click the plus next to Display Adapter>right click
the particular video devices (one at a time)(like nVIDIA
blah blah)>choose "uninstall". If there is more than one,
do them one at a time. If only one, after it uninstalls,
restart, and Plug and Pray may find it just fine. If not,
come back, and someone will help. (BTW, the resolution may
still try to put you at 16 colors, so try to change it one
step at a time, and see what happens)

I answered this only because, you didn't mention who had
helped you with your, "oh, dammit". Whoever toes I may have
stepped on, Sorry.

good computing,
