Device Manager/System Restore/Modem Problem

On startup, my modem is not recognized and Device Manager is blank. When I
try System Resore to an earlier Resore point, I get the message "Cannot
Restore to this point - no changes made".

I then have to restart in Safe Mode and Run
"%SystemRoot%\System32\Restore\Rstrui.exe" and this will restore the system
to the earlier Restore point and everything works.

The problem is that this re-occurs again the next day or even later on the
same day after shutdown and restart. I have run Antivirus and Spyware - no
virus or critical spyware.

Can anyone please help. Thanks

Hi Tony,

Run disk check, tell us what you get.
Get a diagnostic from the HD manufacturer site and have it check your HD.

Is your HD larger than 128 GB while not having SP2 installed ?

This issue showing up recently, seems to be caused by a Malware named
Apropos.C. It installs a Kernel driver with a random file name. More
information available at:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/spyware.apropos.c.html

Removal tool:

See if running the AproposFix tool below helps:

Thanks to McCarthy for supplying the above URL. Note that the utility
referenced above removes a Malware reponsible for blank device manager.

Thanks a lot Ramesh. The Aproposfix utility seemed to have fixed the problem.
Also thanks to everyone else who provided other info.

I have the folowing file that has a start mode of Boot. Even when I search,
unhide all extensions, use run command, it doesn't show up anywhere.

NAME DESC. FILE
FILE TYPE

SZKG SZKG C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\SZKG.SYS KERNEL DRIVER

STARTED START MODE STATE STATUS ERR. CONTROL

NO BOOT STOPPED OK NORMAL

ACCEPT PAUSE ACCEPT STOP

Someone told me that this is not an Microsoft file.

I don't know what it is or how to get rid of it.

Any help?
