Device Manager is Empty!

Hi,

I have Windows XP Pro X64, SATA.

I went into Safe Mode to run some anti-virus programs. No problems were
found so nothing was deleted. When I returned to normal mode, my computer
was completely changed. I received this message two times when I rebooted:
"OneTouch: Can't enumerate devices." and then "Disk Management: Invalid value
for registry. No services."

Device Manager is empty. When I click on My Computer and click on Manage,
nothing happens. My connection to the internet is no longer there and I
can't make another connection. Many of my programs don't work and the few
that do work move approximately 90% slower than normal.

Can someone help me?

First try booting up like you did is safe mode but choose last know good
configuraton

If that doesn't work

Try running system restore (start / accessories/system tools select system
restore)
Hopefully it can find some place to go back to , but if your scan in safe
mode was a full one , you will have nowhere to go backward , too many hits.

Run your virus scan in windows Then reboot If that doesn't work.

Run chkdsk it can clear up inconsistencies is clusters (the way your
hardrive is written)

To do so :
Right click you start bar , select explore, right click your local disk
(usually c) select properties , select check now . Check box for
automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attemp recovery of bad
sectors

You will have to reboot. The scan will take place when windows boots up.

I reformatted the hard drive. I decided that it would be best instead of
running tests, looking for the problem, trying fixes, etc.

I not only didn't have anything in Device Manager, but Disk Management and
Services were also empty. I don't know how this occurred. I've run
anti-virus/worm/trojan scans in Safe Mode many times and have never come
across this problem before. I still had my programs but most of them didn't
work, but some of them did. All of my files were still there. I was able to
open folders and I opened Programs and all the programs were still there.

It's the strangest thing.

Hi, I'm having the same problem. I started up my notebook one morning and
there was no sound, the desktop looked like win2000 (aero was off or
something), hardly any of my startup programs started and I had no network
connections.

I couldn't start my antivirus (f-secure for vista) nor could I run system
restore. I checked my device manager and it was entirely empty. I read
somewhere to check msconfig - services, and saw it was almost entirely empty
(I don't know wether this is significant or not). I started windows in
Failsafe to see if that would work better, but I could still not use system
recovery or my antivirus.

So I chose "repair" (I use swedish vista, so I don't know what the english
name would be) at startup instead of failsafe, and managed to start system
recovery that way, and that worked. My antivirus later found something called
WarReg in a folder in C:\Acer\WR_PopUp, that was trying to edit my something
in my system (I don't know if this is significant either, if it's a virus or
something)

Does anyone know if it's a virus that has done this? If so, how do I remove
it? Is there anything else I could have done?

Thanks

I think the mistake I made was to select "Last known best configureation"
because the last best know configuration was when I was in Safe Mode, so i
got stuck there.

What I decided to do was reformat my hard drive. Reformatting the hard
drive also eliminated the problem I was having. It was the most extreme
solution but since I've formatted hard drives previous to this, it was my
best option and the easiest. The worst part was the time involved to install
all of my programs again, but I installed the necessary ones first and then
the ones I use the most, and then others that I use infrequently. Some
programs I didn't reinstall because I haven't gotten around to it.
Considering the fact that I reformatted my computer months ago and I haven't
used them shows that I don't need them so I deleted them. These are not
Windows programs or something that my computer needs in order to run. These
were frivilous programs that I picked up, such as Icon Maker, Start Button
Name Changer, etc.
