Developer Toolbar - Functions disappeared when reopening Word docu

I created a Word document with drop-down and text fields from the developer
tool bar.

When I saved the document and reopened it later that day all the fields were
inactive - just gray text. I recreated the drop-downs and saved it again. I
reopened it later in the day and it was fine, but now 3 days later the fields
are again inactive.

What is going wrong when I save or reopen? I can't figure it out.

It sounds as if the document is in Design mode. If you installed not only
form fields but also ActiveX controls, there's your explanation: the ActiveX
controls force design mode (this is a security setting in Word).

To turn off Design mode in Word 2007, click the Design Mode button on the
Developer tab. But note that this is just a temporary fix. It will be easier
to avoid ActiveX controls altogether and instead use only legacy form fields.

Alternatively, use content controls, assuming that you don't need the
document to be backward compatible with Word 97-2003.
