Determine source of text control of a combobox

I need to determine if the text contained in the text portion of a combobox
was a result ofa user typing it in, or from selecting an item from the drop
down list.

What's the best way to go about this?

Override keypress/keydown event and check for selected index changed
events. Ofcourse we need to write some custom code to determine it.
