Detecting Proxy Settings" question

I use a VPN connection to access my company's intranet for work purposes.
When ever I use Internet Explorer while on my VPN I get a message "detecting
proxy settings" which causes a delay of up to a minute before navigating to
the web site. Any subsequent IE activity is fine after the initial delay.
When I disconnect from the VPN and then access the web again, I have another
long delay while it detects the proxy settings again. Is there any way to
avoid this annoying delays? I have IE set to automatically detect proxy
settings and I am using WIN2K and IE 6.0. I also have a cable router (LinkSys
BEFSR41) that is connected to my cable modem. Thanks for your help in
advance!

Talk to your company's MIS/IT group.

Does that mean you believe ther may be a fix? I experience the same
thing, and it is very annoying. If there's a fix, I'm much more likely to
find it here and tell our IT group than the other way around.

Gary,

I received a reply from Kurt in another newsgroup that suggested (in my case
anyway) that I uncheck the selection "automatically detect settings" in
IE\Internet options\connections\LAN. I followed that and everything works
fine now; no more "detecting proxy server" delays anymore. Let me know if
this works or not and I can perhaps forward you his responses on other
scenarios.

I tried your suggestion, and it's working fine. No more "detecting proxy
settings". So far I haven't seen any negative side-effects from
unchecking that option. Strange that it defaults to "on", isn't it?

It is strange that it defaults to "on" but perhaps it is in case you do have
different "proxy" settings. The main thing is that it has solved my problem
with no ill effects noted so far and hopefully you will experience the same
result. Glad to help!
