Destop Icons (unwanted highlighting)

I was working with some photographs today - editing
program.
Suddenly all the icons on my destop became highlighted
(including the name of the icon). I cannot switch off
this highlighting - to resore the icons to their former
pleasant aspect.
Please help.

One idea. Try:
Control Panel>Display>Appearance tab>Effects... button. In next dialog box,
unmark "Show shading under menus" if it's checkmarked.
