How can I save the layout of the icons on my desktop in Vista? I prefer a
layout with similar types of programs' icons clustered, but everytime I
reboot the computer, the layout changes back to a sort-by-name scenario. Any
suggestions welcomed. Thanks!

see third message there for how to install. It works fine with Vista.
Look for LAYOUT.DLL and LAYOUT.REG in layout.zip from the MS Windows NT 4.0
Resource Kit.
If somewhere there is an option to run as administrator, take it.
