A friend told me that having more than a couple of
shortcuts on the desktop will reduce my computer's speed
when running programs. Is this true? Should I remove all
but a few of my desktop shortcuts (I have about 15
shortcuts there now). Thanks

no, the number of shortcuts on your desktop will in no way inpact your
speed.

I think a few is OK. It was a potential problem in Win9x/ME which have
limited "system resources" which can be consumed by icons/links,
document, folders, and the like residing on the desktop. WinXP is more
constrained by things like visual enhancements, found in System
Properties/Advanced Tab/Performance Settings button. The difference in
perceived performance is quite noticeable if Performance is selected.
