When i log on to my user(only happens in mine)my icons start in the top
left corner but after a few seconds they drop down two inches and i
cannot move them back up.applications cant expand to full screen
either.I think it might be to do with a startup program but am not sure
and cant pin it down.I would be very grateful if someone could help me
with this.
Yours sincerely

There are too many causes.. you might look through these archived posts:

http://groups.google.com/groups?q=blank+space+top+desktop&Submit3=Search

There are 19,200 articles and I imagine a few causes.

Cause #1

Apparently there is a row reserved in the icon grid for a
toolbar that is gone. Where is desktop real estate
controlled, in the registry? Any idea how I can fix it?
Thanks, JE

Cause #2

OK. Invisible icons... sounds like flushing the icon cache is the
first step. Rt-click desktop, Properties, Appearance, select Icon as
the Item, note the icon size, change size, Apply, change size back, OK

Cause #3

Right click anywhere on the desktop and choose Arrange Icons By...
See if "Lock Web Items On Desktop" is checked. If so, uncheck and try
to delete it again.

Or, right click the desktop and choose properties....
Then click the Desktop tab and then click the Customize Desktop button....
Then click the Web tab and see if you have anything set in that dialog.

Cause #4

On my Gateway laptop with ME, I now get a dead zone at the top of the
screen about a half inch wide. It does not respond to any right clicks.
When I move any icon on the desktop to it they disappear beneath it.
However, when I move the taskbar from the bottom of the screen to the
top it is on top of the blank space. Can anyone tell me what causes this
and how to get rid of it?

I believe I seen a suggestion once to resize the taskbar to the middle
of the screen and then resize it back to normal to get rid of this
problem. Seems an odd fix, though!

Cause #5

The "Toolbar" I referred to is the Earthlink toolbar (add-
on to IExplore), not the Windows Taskbar. In Taskbar properties "Locked"
and "keep on top" are checked. "Autohide" is not checked.

The new Earthlink toolbar displays at the top of the monitor, but there
is still a blank space below it left over from the E'link upgrade that
crashed. When I minimize the new toolbar the new space goes back to the
desktop, but the old empty space is still there, and icons can't use the
space.

Apparently there is a row reserved in the icon grid for a toolbar that
is gone. Where is desktop real estate controlled, in the registry? Any
idea how I can fix it?

Never mind. I played around with the Desktop Customize settings. I
deleted most of the icons, then put them back, and voila, the empty
space went away. Now I can put icons in the top row of the monitor.
Thanks, JE

Right mouse click the Desktop anywhere and choose (properties) Disable
active desktop first.

Right mouse click the screen again and choose properties.

Display properties will pop up. Under the tab (WEB) un-check the two
boxes and close and see if it goes away.

It may be the (Explorer Channel Bar) or active desktop that is causing
the problem?

It sounds like a file is loading that really isn't there any more? Do
you have office 2000? is there anything in your Start/Programs/Startup
folder?

(I highly recommend going to Office Depot or something and get Norton
Utilities or use the (Mcafee.com) clinic service. You need a system file
and repair utility, it will save you a lot of future headaches.
