Desktop panels!

Please help. I've updated from 98 to XP home edition.
My son and his mates desktop icon writing white on a
transparent ground until the cursor is placed over it. I
have white letters on a black background which does
change colour when it is activated.

How do I get the prettier transparent background please.

Control Panel>System Properties. Advanced tab> Performance Settings button.
Bottom of the list> Use drop shadows for icon labels.
