Desktop not holding color changes (revisited)

I tried the link Kelly sent me and I remember someone (Kelly?) asking
for more info.

I right click on desktop>properties> Themes is: My current theme
modified> appearance is Color Scheme Windows standard. If I change that
to Plum (high color) the desktop will change.

When I reboot the system the Color Scheme reverts back to the blue
windows standard, I've tried the tweak, any other suggestions?

I'm on XP Pro all patches installed, no virus, I've dumped Norton and
moved to AVG. Only one user (me) and no other desktop programs
installed as add ons, I'm looking in gpedit.msc but I don't want to fool
around in there until I'm sure of what I'm doing.

Suggestions?

Themes already set to automatic.
Active Desktop not disabled (that I can figure out) looking in gpedit it
says active desktop not configured actually it all says not configured
I didn't want to start hitting buttons I knew nothing about. (user
configuration)
Nope haven't touched accessibility.
The desktop>properties>appearance>Windows and buttons is grayed out (is
that what you meant?)
Not sure what common tasks is/are

Hi,

I have recreated this on three machines here, using a Desktop Background,
without, changing the colors, etc. I can crash explorer.exe, log off and
reboot and it remains correct.

Will think more on this.....in the meantime, check your settings here:
Mixed thoughts, here.

Go to Start/Administrative Tools/Services/Themes. Set to Automatic.

Desktop Properties/Appearance and the check box under System
Properties/Advanced/
Performance/Settings that reads: Use visual styles on windows and buttons -
is it checked or not?

Are you using Common Tasks?

Have you disabled Active Desktop?

Have you modified any settings in Accessibility?

Yes. Seems as though your Visual Styles are not set. That is what causes
Windows and Buttons to be greyed out.

This has to do with a Policy setting made either via gpedit.msc or manually
via the registry. The side effects are that Windows and Buttons are greyed
out under Desktop Properties/Appearance and the check box under System
Properties/Advanced/Performance/Settings that reads: Use visual styles on
windows and buttons, does not remain checked. This edit corrects that
behavior. Download and apply either one on line 214, they are the same edit.

You rock! It's fixed, it's holding! Feel like taking a stab at the last
two problems?

..wmi corrupt and when I go to certain web pages
http://abclocal.go.com/kabc/ for example it brings up windows installer
and the message this msi must be launched through set up. I've google'd
and can't find an answer I understand.

If that doesn't help and this only happens when using Search on other pages,
run the edit on lines:
171 and 286 (right hand side), ignore the names.

Other than that:

Go to Start/Run and type in:
msiexec /unregister [click ok]

Then Start/Run and type in:
msiexec /regserver [click ok]
