desktop items (they won't go away)

Just like the subject says; I am unable to make my desktop
icons disapear. I try to hide them by right-clicking the
desktop, on the submenu I go to active desktop then click
on Show desktop items, which hides them for about five
seconds, but then they reappear and it is really annoying.

What exactly am I to do to fix this?

have you checked for viruses?
