Desktop issue

I inadvertently dragged my Desktop icon to a Documents folder called Books.
When I tried to fix this, I wound up with two Desktop icons. Then I tried
changing the name of the one that appeared to have nothing in it; now I can't
delete that one - it says it's in use. The upshot is I've managed to drag all
the icons I had back to my Desktop, but I now have a yellow folder called
Desktop under Admin, and also one in the Books Documents folder; and I also
have a blue icon under Admin called "test" which is the name I tried changing
the 2nd Desktop icon to (and which I'm unable to delete. Aa-aaagggh! I'm not
sure how to clean all this mess up. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

I think the easiest thing to do is copy empty folders from another user
account, take ownership and check permissions, then sort out your files and
sort them in the right folders again.

No, I was hoping there was something less drastic I could do.

Actually, unless you have installed a bunch of stuff since your last System
Restore, SR is the way to go and shouldn't necessarily be seen as
"drastic". If this just happened, do a SR to the day before. Or the hour
before.

OK, Malke, I'll give it a go (with some fear and trembling). When I did a
system restore on my old XP computer, I lost all the data I'd saved for days
following the selected restore time.

This shouldn't have happened unless you save your data in a weird place,
like a Temp folder, but be cautious and back up first. If you don't have
current backups, you should create and implement a backup strategy anyway
because something will *always* happen sooner or later.

I did the system restore, and was pleased to find my documents were still
up-to-date. But there was one residual "Desktop" folder in with my Documents.
It just contained some shortcuts, though, so I dragged them out and deleted
the thing. One unfortunate consequence that I remembered after the fact was
I'd done a number of hardware updates in the past week. The downloaded files
are not where they were when I saved them, and I don't remember which day I
installed them. So I'll have to go back to the website and check if they got
installed, plus I may have to download them again because I do my backups
just about the same day that I restored to. Dang.
