If the software does not offer the choice during install. right drag the
program's EXE to the desktop and choose Create shortcut here.
 
If available, you get the option when installing/loading new software not from Windows XP.
It's part of the new software you're installing.

You can however, create your own shortcut to the new software on your desktop. Select
Start, all programs - locate the program, then right click and drag to desktop (release
mouse), you'll get the option to copy.
