I use Win XP as my desktop wallpaper but my icon names are in a different
colored box. How do I get rid of the background color?

From a previous post by Malke

Four things are required for transparent icon backgrounds:

1) System Properties>Advanced>Performance Settings>Visual Effects -
check
“use drop shadows for icon labelsâ€.

2) Right-click on Desktop>Arrange Icons by>Lock web items must be cleared.

3) If you have any web content on your desktop, transparency won’t work.
To check for web content: Display Properties>Desktop>Customize Desktop>Web -
make sure all check boxes are clear.

4) Wallpaper must be an image file, not html.

Click start, then right-click My Computer. Click Properties, and then the
Advanced tab. Then under Performance, click settings. Scroll towards the
bottom and check the "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" box.
