Anybody know the setting/option to prevent desktop icons from
snapping to a grid?

i.e. to allow more precise positioning of icons...

Right-click a blank place on the desktop > Arrange Icons By > Untick Align
to Grid.

Hope this helps

Right click on desktop
Arrange Icons By...
Toggle - Align to Grid

I know I'm gonna get ripped a new one just for asking, but with a post like
this, and the solution...I have to ask anyway:

Have you *ever* right-clicked on the desktop at all? Did the first menu
item, "Arrange Icons By...", not seem like it *might* have anything to do
with this at all? Or its Align to Grid submenu?

Is it the terminology?

Where have you looked previously?

Flaming be damned, I'm genuinely curious and I'd love to see the honest
response.

Sometimes it helps to use ALT-V-V-G under Outlook Express to group
messages.

The honest response is that I use this thing (XP Pro) about 10
hours a day as a developer and have used sooooooo many options
and settings that they're all more or less of a blur to me.

I right-click on a desktop (either mine or some users) at least
10 times a week. I also right-click on about a hundred other
things at least once a week.

Do I read every entry in every menu that pops?

No way Jose'.... and if I did, I wouldn't remember them all
anyhow.

So...you haven't even bothered trying, or you tried, but still didn't take
the time to actually *read* the menus, for once, you've invoked. Am I
reading this right?

How do you figure *anything* out?

Nope.
