desktop icons move

Greetings -

In am using a Dell Latitude D600 that came with Windows XP and later had
Windows 2000 Pro installed, so I could run a particular app that needed Win
2000.

In the office the laptop uses a docking bar and runs a 21 inch monitor
(laptop lid closed), at home it is just the laptop screen (laptop lid
opened). When I first got this setup, everytime I would start the laptop at
home, the icons on the desktop would have moved to the upper left corner of
the desktop and be arranged in roughly alphabetical order.

I was told to fix that by clicking an function key on the laptop keyboard
labeled LCD/CRT. I imagine that set something that accomodates switching
between the laptop LCD and a connected CRT. All was then fine.

Now I am trying to listen to some lectures that are in MP3 files on the
laptop as I drive home. So I am running RealPlayer and listening with an
earbud. And I discovered that I can close the laptop lid and RealPlayer
keeps on running. Way cool and it keeps me from being blinded by the LCD
light when I am driving after dark.

But, when I then re-open the lid, the desktop icons have moved again, as
before. I do not think I am actually doing a "hibernate" or "standby"
because RealPlayer is running. But the LCD screen does seem to turn off, so
something is going on.

Is there a setting in Windows that just says "leaving the darn desktop icons
alone". Or even several settings under "hibernate" or "standby" or
"suspend"?

Thanks

How about right-click the desktop and select "Lock Icons on Desktop" and see
if this solves the problem somehow I don't see the connection between
opening/closing the laptop's screen, and all the icons moving around.

As to the screen going off, perhaps you do have a power setting enabled that
turns the screen off? In the Advanced Power management properties in
Control Panel.

Andrew -

Thanks. There is a setting under Power - Advanced that says "Standby" for
"When I Close the Laptop Lid", so I guess the computer is going into Standby
and RealPlayer just keeps on playing. Cool. But there is nothing so far that
talks about scrambling the desktop icons.

The current OS must be Win 2000 since there is not a selection for "Lock
Icons", but I have had "Auto Arrange" turn off for a long time under Right
Click - Arrange Icons. Maybe "Lock Icons" got added to XP just to take care
of this sort of thing. Maybe I will go back to XP, since I am no longer
using the app that needed Win 2000.
