How do I get rid of the little arrow (lower letf corner) that appears each
time I create a new desktop icon?

Here are some instructions you can try:

I have never used them myself, so I don't have much more to offer than that.

Jerry and Carl:
Probably the easiest way is to download and install Microsoft's Tweak UI
(PowerToys) program from Microsoft at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
This program has a number of useful mini-programs that you may find
interesting, including an item to eliminate the bent-arrow from your desktop
shortcut icons. In the Tweak UI program go to Explorer > Shortcut and you'll
find an option to remove those arrows from your shortcut icons.

Don't. That arrow is telling you that you're looking at a shortcut,
not an executable file. You can delete, move, or rename the shortcut
without affecting the program, you can't do that to the executable.

You can get rid of the arrows with a registry edit, or more
easily and more safely by using the free TweakUI, downloadable as
part of Microsoft PowerToys at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp
(if you have SP1 or SP2 installed) or
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe
(or if you don't have SP1 or SP2).

However, my recommendation is that you do *not* do this. The
arrows serve an important function--providing quick visual
identification of a shortcut. If you remove the arrows, you run
the substantial risk that sooner or later you will delete
something you wanted to keep, thinking that you were just
deleting a shortcut to it. I would either leave the arrows as
they are, or alternatively use the TweakUI option of light
arrows, which are somewhat less visible that the regular ones.

Use TweakUI - one of the XP Powertoys from
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

Once installed you will find it in Start - All Programs - Powertoys for
Windows XP

Its Explorer - Shortcut page, select. I suggest trying light arrow,
which is very inconspicuous, but allows you to tell shortcuts from
actual files if needed
