desktop icons continually rebuilding

When I change programmes, or put in a zip disk, etc.,
quite often Windows xp pauses for several (5-10) seconds
(during which one can do nothing) to rebuild all its
icons.

I don't think it always did this. I have a vague memory of
having once turned off an "icon cache" - but I'm not sure.

Anyone any idea how I can get rid of this behaviour?

Well, since applying this, the icons have stayed rock-
firm. Great! However, Windows Explorer then crashed 3
times within 5 minutes. I've now rebooted and things seem
to be going better. Thanks.
