Why, why, why do my desktop icons seldom stay where I want them? A more
important question....is there a way to lock those suckers in place that
doesn't require my having a Phd in Computer Science?

Right click desktop, click arrange icons by, then click lock to grid (and if
you also want them sorted in some way, select the option you want).

Although this does not solve your exact problem, it does provide a
convenient workaround. Download and install Icon Restore from

http://download.cnet.com/Icon-Restore/3000-2072_4-10163499.html

It provides the ability to save your icon layout and to restore it at a
couple of click of your mouse.

Get used to it or find a 3rd party app. It used to drive me mad that my icons
would randomly shuffle every boot/resume/crash/unlock/whenever, but I stopped
caring after using Vista for 6 months (You think its bad in XP :V), now I
just keep what junk I'm using most often on the desktop (shortcuts to
folders) and everything else in the Quick Launch.

Thanks for your input. Do see Kelly's reply above. Her/His(?) reference to
Line 188 in the indicted link is a good fix. ( I had tried "Icon Restorer"
and it really didn't work very well, at least on my system)

I did. I used to use it for a long time (pre-Vista). After the huge head
aches with Vista and then switching back, it was no longer a big deal to me,
Vista would shuffle icons every [random number] minutes along with my screens
sizes and positions. I found the Quick launch to be easier since I don't have
to move my windows anymore, which was another habit from Vista, it would
sometime put a window off the screen if I'd move it around too much and they
random screen changing happens :C

My suggestion is that you use XP against itself...

Get all your icons in the order in which you like them.

Then, re-name your icons like this from top to bottom :

1. Iconname
2. Iconname
3. Iconname
4. Iconname

....then, if they ever shift, all you do is right-click on the desktop
and choose 'Arrange Icons by...' and select 'Name' to have them arranged
alphabetically.

Since you have prefaced each name with a number, they will go to the
order you named them in.

If you have more than 9 icons, as most people do, then name them 1.0,
1.1, 1.2, etc,
