| I'd like to put an icon for my desktop in the task bar.

Right click on an empty area of the taskbar. Select Properties. Put a check in
the box beside Show Quick Launch. There will probably be additional icons other
than the one for Desktop, but they can be deleted.
I'm using that setup and have just the desktop icon beside the Start button.
