I upgraded from Windows ME to XP Professional. In
cleaning up the desktop, I have one shortcut that cannot
be deleted. A right click shortcut menu offers
only "Print" or "Send to." I tried to use the Cleanup
Wizard but the shortcut doesn't appear there. When I go
into the file list for the desktop icons, the icon is
shown, but it won't respond to any commands. How can I
get rid of this unwanted shortcut? Thanks.

It may have been installed as a 'Namespace' item.

For those, run regedit.exe and open to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Explorer\Desktop\Namespace

and look down the subkeys it contains, checking the right pane for each.
When you identify the unwanted item, delete it
