Desktop Icon problems

I only keep a couple of icons on my desktop, My Computer & Recycle Bin
(everything else is in a tool bar), and lately after loading a new
program and such these become corrupt and change to the generic square,
they still work and the ones in the tool bar are fine but I have to keep
going into 'display/Desktop/Customise Desktop" to reset them, any
suggestion on a fix?
