desktop icon labels

suddenly, the details (contents/path) of my desktop icons and folders
are not displayed when i place the pointer on them. This seems to have
arisen spontaneously, but i'm sure i did something screwy. i went into
the display controls (control panel) and reset everything to default,
but that didn't work. i can't use system restore b/c there aren't any
restore points (too complicated and irrelevant to explain).

Please, please help......i know it's a trivial matter, but i'm
COMPLETELY NEUROTIC about my computer working right.
 
Shouldn't you be more concerned about System Restore not working? Especially
if you're "COMPLETELY NEUROTIC about my computer working right"?
