Desktop Hijacking

Hi,

It seems that my IE6 has been hijacked by spyware, its happened many times
before, but this time a number of ICONS have been placed on my desktop,
again not unusual. What is unusual is that I cant right mouse click these
dodgy icons and remove them, I cant even move them. Do you have any ideas
how to get rid of these damn things and how to prevent further hijacking.

Many thanks

oh dear, sounds like you have the dreaded inkjet casino gambling icons...

the ONLY way to solve it is system restore

sorry...

Those icons are not files, that's why you can't delete them. They are
pointers to various websites. They are not viruses or spyware.

Before you select System Restore (which is what I did and it dint help) and
before you begin to delete stuff from the registry (which is what I did and
it dint help) try some steps from a previous thread.

Here's how to hopefully get to the thread I'm referring to:

Once you've selected the 'Windows XP Help and Support, click the down arrow
at the top of the discussion window. Select the topic 'Questions with
answers' and look for the discussion thread where the title reads 'Can't
remove desktop icons'. Some suggestions by myself and a couple of other guys
was able to help other people. So please, I encourage you to give it a try.

I have 6 people who use my PC. I believe that the icons appeared when they
went to one of their online games site but I can't prove it. I have another
computer that they can use and I told them that they can play their online
game stuff on that computer. I'm hoping that they will go to the site that
made those icons appear.

I'm trying to put together a good procedure on how to delete them once
they show up.

The other computer has no important data on it so I want them to break that
one so I can install other Operating Systems (such as 2000, NT4, XP Pro,
etc.) in order to learn more about networking computers with different
Operating Systems.

Hope that other thread works for you.

Hello, You have received good answers on problem removal.
To not aquire the problem "do not go to these sites". I know that will not
work. The reason you aquire this problem is letting these sites install
trojans and other items on your computer. No matter what security you have
if you invite the problem on to your computer this negates all the security.
Research a product called GoBack I beleive Symantec (Norton) now owns this
program. Install a couple of other browsers as back ups. There are some third
party items such as: WinPatrol - AdShield - Spyware Blaster etc. that help.
Place the sites that cause the most problems on the restricted sites list in
IE6.
If you can afford another computer use it for online gaming, gambling , sex
sites and hack/crack sites keep your main unit away from this type of
activity. Right now new units can be bought for $500.00 US. I recently
purchased one from a local store for $400.00 US.
Take Care.
beamish.

Lyn,

Thanks for that, I already have Macefee Virus Scan and firewall software,
plus ad-aware and spybot, these damn things got past all of those, system
restore has got rid of them. I think I know the culprit, Imesh, I wont use
it again.

Thanks to all who replied, nice to know there are experts out there.

Regards
