Desktop font gone block

I have no idea what I did to deserve this:

My desktop font has become BLOCK with shadow.

No matter what font I use and bold or not.
No matter what desktop color I use.

I can get simple black only with no wallpaper and
a white desktop.

How do I get a simple, solid, black font?

oops. I found this in m.p.wxp.customize by Ramesh in March 2004:

Please turn of caps. To set the desktop icons to transparent, try this:

1. Open Control Panel
2. Double-click System
3. Select the Advanced tab, and click the Settings button under the
Performance header.
4. Make sure that on the Visual Effects tab, the option Use drop shadows for
icon labels on the desktop is selected.
