Desktop folders and gone but show up in safe mode only? Any ideas please.

I recently had a bunch of serious problems probbely due to spyware or
viruses. Started getting messages about missing files like winupd.dll which
I think is a virus. So I did a install repair of windows up pro. After
which I had most of my desktop folders disappear (but they reappear in safe
mode)but I still have missing all errors and a lot of things don't work
like IE6 but mozilla still does. I don't want to reformat as I will lose
some important files. Is it possible to repair without reformatting?

Hi Gordy,

Run the edit on line 12 and read the article below:

EXE and LNK Fix for Windows XP - Line 12

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

HOW TO: Take Ownership of a File or Folder in Windows XP

If neither helps, you are needing to run the cleaners mentioned here and
make sure they are updated. Good luck!
