I have windows XP home edition, and when I star windows the desktop only
shows the background, no icons or anything, just the background, I tried
restarting it but it keeps showing the background only...anyone know why is
this happening or how can I solve it?

Thanks

Hi

Next time you reboot to the Desktop, open the Task Manager, go to File>New
Task(Run...) and type in

explorer

Firzen,
I had exactly that problem 2 days ago. For almost 1 day, I had to bring up
TaskManager by hitting the alt-cont-del keys, and then running explorer.exe
( as described by Mr Will Denny)
However, if it helps, I had resolved the problem by clicking start, then run
and type in sfc /scannow. You need your XP cd in the PC.
Let it run and after its finished, my desktop came back normal. Been OK
since then.
Hope this will help you.

Hi

Yes, either sfc /scannow or a System Restore back to a point before the
problem started.

Thanks for answering, but when I type explorer or explorer.exe it only shows
a window saying that there is no program associated for that action, and it
happens the same with sfc /scannow even with my XP cd in the PC and sometimes
it won't let me open the task manager.

anymore ideas? or how can I open system restore?

Thank you

When you are at the Task Manager, use the browse button to go to the
c:\windows directory to select the explorer.exe Do not just type in
explorer.exe
In my case, I get my desktop back this way and from here, I ran the sfc
/scannow.
Hope this can help.

It still shows me the error message, "there is no program associated for this
action create and association in control panel, folder options". And I now
went to c:\windows and selected the explorer exe

Thanks, but I can't open anything in my PC (laptop), the posts I have made
are from another PC I have, I downloaded the files in my other PC, and tried
to pass them to my laptop by usb and cd but when I try to open them via task
manager the same error message appears, "there is no file assosiation for
that action"

Rename the xp_exe_fix.reg to exefix.reg and move it into the C:\ root.
From a command prompt type in reg import C:\exefix.exe
If that fails, let me know if the reg /? command works from a command
prompt.

It didn't work, neither the reg /? command, it only shows the message that
there is no program associated for that action

well as a last resort try this:
I a command prompt type these commands

copy c:\windows\reg.exe c:\windows\reg.com
If that fails use :

ren c:\windows\reg.exe reg.com
If neither commands is successful then skip the rest.

If successful use the reg import c:\exefix.reg command

When done use ren c:\windows\reg.com reg.exe to reset the filename.

If that fails, then im out of ideas and can only suggest a repair install.
