Desktop Custom icons Revert to Default

This one is baffling me..Have customized several desktop icons in XP Pro as
long as i have had XP (years); namely, My Computer and recycle Bin by going
thru the Control Panel applet. Suddenly these will not 'save' and are
replaced by default icons during certain operations (random) and whenever
desktop is refreshed.
The usual tweaks do not work to hold them as i have set them for several
years this way. I use drop labels on desktop and by checking 'lock icons'
the label appears under icons, an undesirable effect, and then they do not
change, otherwise i am unable to get them to remain in my customized way..
This is new behavior as i said and while i have SP1, i have NOT installed
SP2. Have done all the searching on the Web for an answer, aside from a
tricky regedit, so any help is really appreciated. Thank you.

This used to happen to me all the time. I found by unticking "Offline web
pages" in disk cleanup stopped it. Also TweakUI from Microsoft Powertoys
has a "restore icons" feature.

Thanks, but i don't have an 'offline web pages' entree in my Disc Cleanup
applet...

Offline content is stored in the Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5
folder. I believe that the OP is referring to losing favicons that are
stored there when that folder is cleaned out. Has nothing to do with your
problem.
