Desktop Color Behind My Icons

I downloaded a virus 2 days ago (yes, looking at porn). I downloaded the
appropriate cleaning programs, went to confession to have my sins absolved,
and rid the computer of the problem. After "The Cleansing" (as I like to
call it) I had no desktop and I could not load one because the field where
you choose the desktop was inactive. I searched this wonderful site and
found the solution to fix my desktop problem (I did something in regedit);
thank you very much Ramesh. Unfortunately, the icon text is no longer
transparent and there is a box around the text. I can change the color of
the box but that is about it. Once again, I return to windows xp newsgroups
for another search. I have done everything that has seemed to work for
everyone else but my colored boxes remain. I have:

Control Panel -> System _> Advanced tab -> Performance section -> Settings
button -> Find the part for "Use drop shadows for icons on the desktop" and
make sure it is checked

and

Right click on the Desktop (anywhere) and
click on "arrange icons by", then uncheck the line that says "lock web items
on desktop", which should currently be checked

I have "cycled" this process, as one post suggested, in every imaginable
order and must have restarted my computer 20 times. Anyone have any other
suggestions?

Four things are required for transparent icon backgrounds:

1.Control Panel-System-Advanced-Performance Settings.
Check "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" on the Visual
Effects tab.

2.Right-click on Desktop - "Arrange Icons by" and ensure Lock Web
items is cleared.

3.Transparency will not work if you have web content on your desktop,
Control Panel - Display Properties - Desktop tab - Customize Desktop -
Web tab. Clear all check boxes.

4. Ensure the Wallpaper is an image file not HTML.

See:
Desktop icons and icon labels may not display background transparency
or the drop shadow effect in Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP

I am experiencing the same problem did you ever get your icons fixed? I have
tried all of the above steps you've mentioned also.
